摘要

Exposure to acute variations in gravity induces haemodynamic alterations in the human cardiovascular system, due to changing hydrostatic pressure gradients. This experiment aims to add to current knowledge on the contribution of venous blood flow from the lower limbs to central blood volume, during entry into micro-gravity, and on re-exposure to hyper- and normal gravity conditions. The pilot experiment took place during the European Space Agency Student Parabolic Flight Campaign, in July 2004. Simultaneous measurements of lower limb venous flow volume, cardiac output and heart rate were performed using strain-gauge plethysmography, duplex Doppler ultrasonography and non-invasive inert gas rebreathing (a new combination of experimental techniques). Data were collected from 4 test subjects, during 2 flights of 30 parabolas. The pilot flight highlighted many areas for improvement in the study design. The project is ongoing, with continuing analysis of the data and comparative studies into venous flow volume patterns in patients with vascular insufficiency; combining resources for space and clinical medical research.
