摘要

The concept of an Outpost on Mars, defined as a site where an infrastructure is built up for long-term or repeated occupation by human explorers, has often been suggested. Based upon results obtained from the Opportunity Mars Exploration Rover (MER) at the Meridiani Planum landing site, the larger area of Terra Meridiani is confirmed as one of the highest priority sites for concentrated scientific exploration on Mars. Evaluations of its suitability for human exploration, including operations, safety, habitability and resources also result in highly favorable assessments of this location as an early human Outpost. Although the on-going exploration by orbiters and upcoming future missions may possibly discover other areas of equal or greater scientific value, this site shows, at least, that an Outpost on Mars at this location already meets many of the a priori safety, engineering and scientific criteria for superior suitability.
