New categories of data cables are currently developed due to requirements that result from the introduction of higher bandwidth data transmission protocols (10GBASE-T). Especially for unscreened systems the crosstalk between cables - commonly called alien crosstalk - is the main limiting factor. An analysis of these effects with respect to cables is described considering the mechanisms causing alien crosstalk and the measurement techniques quantifying it. The main coupling paths for balanced and unbalanced signals are taken into account. A solution for an unscreened cable based on a unique tape construction is shown. Its performance is analysed and compared to other solutions, traditional unscreened cables as well as screened cables. Design principles are described with respect to the impact of the tape design on the coupling paths and on the return loss.
