BT has been deploying optical fibre for high data rate applications (both core and access networks) for more than 25 years. The data rate requirements for residential customers is increasing rapidly as applications such as video 'on-demand' become closer to reality and in consequence, BT is evolving its evolution path strategy for fibre access networks and much development work, both practical and theoretical, is in progress. This evolution path considers many options for the migration of fibre to both new and established residential, commercial and SOHO premises. For green field sites BT has undertaken cost modelling to determine optimum solutions, taking into consideration issues such as capital and operational costs, combined with networks that give maximum flexibility in terms of installation and reconfiguration of cable and plant, testing and diagnostics.
