Maximising black liquor evaporation performance is often critical for recovery constrained mills. Achieving increased evaporation has huge financial incentive due to the direct effect on pulp production volumes. Four small projects completed at Kinleith over 2 years have increased total evaporation capacity by almost 6%, while only expending minimal capital. Evaporator benchmarking studies remain a solid starting point for identifying shortcomings and constraints within current operations and equipment. Many and varied resources are available to assist improving evaporation including equipment suppliers, operators, literature and technology experts. Targeted, sustained effort will achieve good results in increasing evaporation capacity, often without huge capital expenditure. However, good process information must be available to assist the decision making process.
