In this research project different Portland cement pastes with low water/cement (w/c) ratios - as used in high performance concretes - were stored under water at 8 C, 20 C and 50 C up to 360 days. Afterwards the samples were investigated with regard to a possible destructive expansion and change in microstructure due to hydration of clinker relicts with water permeated through the surfaces into the specimen. Beside the determination of the length change and compressive strength the following examinations were carried out: Mercury intrusion porosimetry, x-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence-microscopy. The performed investigations lead to the conclusion that the hydration reaction does not stop by self-desiccation. Water permeates into the specimen and leads to further hydration. Nevertheless there is no visible evidence for the presence of any cracks on the surface or in the bulk of the specimen yet. The compressive strength is not reduced. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed.
