The Effects of Low-level Arsenic Exposure on Erythrocyte Membrane Proteins in Male Rats

The rats were exposed to arsenic in drinking water (10, 60, 360μg/L) for 30 days. As shown in SDS-PAGE, compared with the control group, ankyrin content was significantly decreased in 360μg/L dose group. With exposure levels rising, band 3 protein expression presented an increasing trend in the treated groups. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed that, in 60μg/L and 360μg/L arsenic treatment groups, band 3 and CD3S increased and clustered to the RBC membrane. The results for rat erythrocyte parameters revealed that the abnormal changes have not occurred in the exposed groups. This study suggests that the injuries in RBC membrane proteins occur earlier than the abnormal changes in RBC number and volume. Erythrocyte membrane proteins may be the early biomarkers of chronic arsenic poisoning.
