A number of casting processes are available for the manufacture of aluminium cast parts, each with its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The result of a process comparison for thin walled castings is presented by example of a current production part. The material and part characteristics of the production permanent mould casting method was compared with the sand casting method and a cost comparison was carried out, whereby the possible potential of the sand casting method for manufacture of thin walled castings for the chassis was shown. The first results of the sand castings show that the mechanical properties in the thin walled areas, the deformations from static and dynamic loads are comparable to the permanent mould castings. Due to a limitation by the crack position in a thick walled area, the number of load cycles able to be carried by the sand casting was somewhat reduced. These first results and the cost advantage in manufacturing make it quite worthwhile to carry out further tests and developments.
