摘要

The goal of the DebriSat project is to characterizernfragments generated by a hypervelocity collisionrninvolving a modern satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO).rnThe DebriSat project will update and expand upon therninformation obtained in the 1992 Satellite Orbital DebrisrnCharacterization Impact Test (SOCIT), whichrncharacterized the breakup of a 1960s U.S. Navy Transitrnsatellite. There are three phases to this project: therndesign and fabrication of DebriSat - an engineeringrnmodel representing a modern, 60-cm/50-kg LEOrnsatellite; performance of a laboratory-basedrnhypervelocity impact to catastrophically break up thernsatellite; and characterization of the properties ofrnbreakup fragments down to 2 mm in size. The datarnobtained, including fragment size, area-to-mass ratio, rndensity, shape, material composition, optical properties, rnand radar cross-section distributions, will be used tornsupplement the DoD and NASA satellite breakuprnmodels to better describe the breakup outcome of arnmodern satellite.
