A new type of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sheet has been introduced in concrete strengthening applications, which consists of Steel FRP (SFRP) as the reinforcing material. Thus, it is important to examine the behaviour of SFRP sheets for confining concrete columns and compare the performance to commonly used Carbon FRP (CFRP) sheet. In this study, plain concrete cylinders (150x300mm) were wrapped with CFRP and SFRP sheets. The experimental program included nine cylinders divided into three groups. The first group consisted of three control unwrapped cylinders, the second group consisted of three cylinders wrapped with CFRP sheets and the third group consisted of three cylinders wrapped with SFRP sheets. Two types of instrumentation were used, conventional foil strain gauges and Digital Image Correlation Technique (DICT). The DICT is a new method to measure strains from the surface of FRP confined concrete. Thus, DICT was implemented to present the hoop strain variations across the height of FRP wrapped concrete cylinders in order to provide a better understanding of the FRP confined concrete behaviour. This paper also presented the enhancement in terms of the stress-strain behaviour, axial strength, axial strain, hoop strain, dilation, and strain efficiency of CFRP and SFRP wrapped concrete cylinders. The results showed that the overall performance of the concrete cylinders wrapped with SFRP sheet were superior to the cylinders wrapped with the conventionally used CFRP sheet.
