The Effect of Educational Backgrounds on the Hazard Image Perception of Industrial Safety Signs

Most preferable and effective method to insure worker's safety is to eliminate all dangerous factors from manufacturing process or industrial plants in design phase. It is unobtainable, however, so that it comes to be inevitable to transmit hazard images to workers accurately and fast. For this, regulations for safety signs based on the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Act specified types, usages, and location to be posted. However, since little attention has been paid to educational background of viewers in designing those signs,they might fail to achieve intended effects. In that sense,for better design, it is required that to catch out factors making differences in the perception of hazard image through safety signs. Thus,in this research, the effect of educational background on perceiving and comprehending of hazard images of industrial workers through safety signs were surveyed. Ninety undergraduate students majoring in different science-visual communication design,the Korean Literature, or safety engineering-and 90 industrial workers participated as subjects. They were asked to list up their impressions with appropriate adjectives and to guess meanings of 20 industrial safety signs individually. The results showed that low comprehension level could be attributed to obscure image maps. They were different for each group, which implied that subjects assumed different hazard images through industrial safety signs. Therefore, it was notified that careful design with a special reference to worker' s educational career would be inevitable in order to overcome those difficulties.
