To elucidate the effects of exogenous NO on Al stress, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on oxidative response, respiration function in mitochondria, and Al adsorption of cell walls in root apex of rye and wheat were examined. The results showed that SNP could ameliorate inhibiting effects of Al on rye and wheat root growth. SNP decreased Al-induced O2-, increased · OH and H2O2 content and enhanced the activities of some mitochondrial binding enzymes such as H+ -ATPase, H+ -PPase, Ca2+ -ATPase in root apex significantly, decreased significantly Al adsorption content of wheat and rye compared with Al stress. It suggested that NO ameliorates Al toxicity by decreasing Al adsorption and ROS level, keeping mitochondrial function.
