Root Breeding for Better Plant Nutrient Efficiency on Acid Soils

Soybean is an essential source of protein, oil, and micronutrients in human and animal diets. A primary limitation to soybean production in the acid soils of South China and other tropical and subtropical regions is low soil phosphorus ( P) availability. Due to the lack of P resources, P fertilizers are expensive and the P ore deposits that can be economically mined and processed into fertilizer are limited and will be eventually depleted. Therefore, developing soybean varieties that can efficiently utilize native P and added P in the soil, which are often in a form unavailable to plants, would be a sustainable approach. In the present study, systematic experiments in the field, greenhouse and laboratory were set out to investigate the physiological, genetic, and molecular aspects of root traits which are related to better plant adaptation to low P conditions and more efficient utilization of applied fertilizers. Attempts were also made to focus on genetic improvement of root traits, or " root breeding" , for better nutrient efficiency in soybean.
