Degradable Behaviors of PLA Nonwovens by UV-Ray Irradiation

Recently, environmental pollution caused by synthetic material wastes has become a serious global issue. Accordingly, the industrial application of biodegradable polymers, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(caprolactone) (PCL), poly(hydroxyl butyrate) (PHB), and poly(butylenes succinate) (PBS) has gradually increased, and has been intensively studied as substitutes for non-degradable polymers. This study aims to investigate the effect of ultra-violet (UV) irradiation on the surface morphology and physical properties of PLA nonwovens, which have been fabricated using the needle-punch technique. The morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties of the PLA nonwovens exposed via UV-ray were examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile tester. The results showed that the weight loss and strength properties of PLA needle-punched nonwovens significantly decreased with increasing UV-ray irradiation time. Moreover, the crystallinity change showed that the degradation of PLA nonwovens through UV-ray irradiation proceeded via surface/bulk erosion mechanism.
