The results of analysis of some data gathered by three independent Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) during prolonged outdoor testing of several commercial photovoltaic modules (PV modules) made of crystalline silicon solar cells are presented. Special emphasis is put on the analysis of data measured during poor insolation periods which are typical for autumn and winter months in Central Europe. It is shown that straightforward prediction of the cumulated amount of electrical energy and/or charge generated by the PV module during particular days and months can not be done in a simple manner using parameters measured under Standard Test Conditions (STC) that are usually specified by module's manufacturer. It is due to fact that performance of PV modules may change nonlinearly with the insolation level. The degree of this nonlinearity depends on the quality of the current-voltage (I-V) curve of the module. Though it is not easy to quantify the effect of the I-V curve quality factor on cumulated electrical energy and/or charge generated by a specific PV module yet it is shown that it should be taken into account when designing PV system to be working for long periods characterized by poor insolation. The presented results should be helpful to more accurate sizing of PV systems.
