The development of a robust MEMS Design for Manufacturing (DFM) strategy is enabled by three capabilities that allow concurrent engineering of MEMS devices: 1) software capable of incorporating materials and process specific variables and statistical data into the design and simulation stream 2) test structures that exercise functionality sufficient to measure MEMS device characteristics and 3) processes proven for various common classes of MEMS devices, which can be used to fabricate test structures and provide measured data to support manufacturing analysis and yield improvement. A methodology for MEMS DFM is presented that focuses on rapid process and design qualification through systematic parametric modeling and testing, from initial development of specifications to volume manufacturing. The result is highly qualified designs with accurately predicted behavior for scalable, repeatable, cost-effective volume production.
