One of the main disadvantages of ceramic components, especially in micro-technology, is their shrinkage during sintering. With the use of a reaction bonded, ZrSiCVbased oxide ceramic however, it is possible to produce net-shape ceramic components with high accuracy. As these components can be mechanically shaped by micromachining before sintering as well as formed by micro-injection moulding they offer an interesting spectrum of applications. In the Institut für Materialforschung III of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, the net-shape sintering ceramic "ZircoDur" was synthesised and basic scientific knowledge for this material could be generated during the last years.rnIn dental medicine ceramic materials become increasingly important. Their chemical stability, excellent biocompatibility and their aesthetics fulfil all preconditions for the application of ceramic materials as fixed partial dentures. The ZrSiCVbased, reaction sintered ceramics have the additional advantage that they compensate for the sintering shrinkage. This enables the fabrication of complex components with details in micrometer precision by machining of the green body. A numerical compensation of the shrinkage is superfluous because of the "intelligent material". A co-operation between the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and the company KaVo GmbH was set up, in order to perform a special development of this material towards application in dental technology. This development was especially oriented to the requirements of machining and sintering this material with the "KaVo Everest?" CAD/CAM system. As a result of this co-operation a new company KaVo Material GmbH was recently established, in order to produce blanks from this material in an industrial scale.
