This paper describes a furnace resistance controller which can be itnegrated into new or existing control systems for submerged arc smelting furnaces. The controller is entirely software based and calculates all furnace, transformer and secondary circuit impedances from real time electrical measurements. The controller functions without reference to electrode-to-bath voltage measurements which are prone to error, thus enhancing the accuracy of the circuit calculations.
