The magnetic field dependence of critical currents in this and ultra-thin epitaxially grown films of YBCO grown on MgO and SrTiO_3 substrates been investigated by VSM measurements. It is shown that growth of YBCO on an epitaxial buffer layer of PrBCO with an amorphous capping layer of PrBCO greatly enhances the superconducting quality and stability of ultra-thin films. Measurements on relatively thick thin films (55-200nm) grown on MgO are compared with measurements on 2, 4 and 6-unit cell buffered and capped YBCO films. Measurements on the thicker films can be interpreted in terms of uniform superconducting properties across the whole area, whilst magnetic measurements on ultra-thin films imply the presence of weak-links leading to a model of weakly connected superconducting islands.
