A Computational Mechanism of the 'Distance' in Narrative: A Trial in the Expansion of Literary Theory

Narrative generation study in artificial intelligence and cognitive science has comparatively long history since Meehan (1980). We also began the research of narrative generation under the stimulus of computational approach using technologies and theoretical frameworks (story grammar, script, goal-plan, relating knowledge representations and discourse techniques, etc.). But because we were originally and strongly interested in narratives, literary works, and other arts and entertainments like music, film, and drama, one of our important purpose through narrative generation study was to assimilate the knowledge in literary areas such as narratology and literary theories (especially, the flow of Russian formalism, structuralism, and post-structuralism, which is represented by Propp, Bakhtin, Barthes, Greimas, Genette, Prince, Bal, etc.) into the framework of narrative generation based on AI and cognitive science. Simultaneously, we have a direction of interest ingness to the creation in digital narrative contents over existing styles (e.g. Endo & Ogata, 2004; Kobayashi & Ogata, 2004). In this paper, we don't refer to the latter, and describe about an idea to treat a theme in narratology, namely the problem of "distance" as one of "narrative discourse" techniques, by computational approach. From the viewpoint of narratology, narrative discourse is related to the aspect of "how to narrate" a narrative content, and the aspect of this content corresponds to "story "or "what to narrate". In the area of narratology, Genette is a researcher who created a very influential and productive theory that has been regarded as a starting point for the systematic approach to the problem of narrative discourse.
