A Study on Laser Welding of Aluminium to Steel for Automotive Skin Sheet Applications

The current work presents the results of laser welding of aluminium in different flange geometries, where the metallurgical appearance of the fusion zone formed between dissimilar metals (i.e., aluminium to steel) can be widely influenced and improved by the use of "property tailored filler materials". All welding experiments were conducted using a 2.5 kW Nd:YAG and a 4 kW diode laser system. In the report the general mechanical and dynamic properties of laser welded flanges of several aluminium alloys and steel combinations are first shown, followed by the results of experiments carried out to study the weldability of flanges due to different filler materials and the occurrence of intermetallic phases. Measurements of the metallurgical composition of the studied alloys and weldments as well as fractographical investigations complete the work. Furthermore SEM investigations of the microstructure of the welded samples were performed.
