There is a broad market opportunity for a MEMS-based replacement of bulky and fragilernreed switches. A MEMS-based magnetic proximity switch could potentially replacernconventional reed switches in applications such as medical diagnostics, miniature hearingrnaids, control systems, automotive and others.rnResponding to customer requests, MEMSCAP has developed an surface mountrntechnology(SMT)-compatible magnetic switch in both normally closed(NC) andrnnormally open(NO) versions. Our approach to commercialization is based on a strongrncustomer focus, identification of performance-driven applications, application of industryrnproven computer aided design tools for modeling and simulation, use of existingrntechnology, and implementation of cost-effective MEMS fabrication and packaging. Ourrnmethodology has enabled product realization in less than one year.rnThis presentation discusses the concepts of the devices and methods of design,rnfabrication, packaging, and testing. It details the collaborative relationship required torninsure that the final product meets the customer's requirements. It provides a review ofrnboth competing technologies and existing applications, and explores the challenges ofrncommercialization.
