The coarse aggregate type in continuously reinforced concrete (CRC) pavements has beenknown as one of the most important design variables that affect the behavior and performanceof the CRC pavement systems. This paper presents how much various coarse aggregatesaffect time histories of mean crack spacing, crack width, and steel stress at crack, crackspacing distribution, and punchout failures. Comparisons of the results have been madeespecially for coarse aggregate types widely used in Texas and Korea such as granite,limestone, and siliceous river gravel. In order to analyze the behavior of the CRC pavements,a recently developed computer program, CRCP-9, has been used. This computer program hasbeen developed using finite element formulations and probabilities theories. The theoreticalbackground for numerical modeling of the CRC pavements, crack spacing prediction, andpunchout prediction is also explained in this paper. The analysis results show that the use ofdifferent coarse aggregates in the CRC pavements results in various pavement performance,which implies that better CRC pavement performance can be achieved by incorporatingcoarse aggregate characteristics in the pavement design.
