The effects of geosorbents on the enzymatically catalyzed coupling reactions of phenol are quantified and interpreted on the basis of a conceptual model advanced earlier. The work reveals that the reactivity of different sorbents with respect to cross-coupling with phenol radicals correlates with the chemical characteristics of the sorbents studied. Cross-coupling reactivities of the sorbents were found to decrease in the order lignin > Chelsea soil > Lachine shale > Polymethylstyrene; i.e., from humic-type organic matter (highly amorphous) to kerogen-like materials (relatively highly condensed). The information provided and insights gained from this study have important implications for the behavior and efficiency of enzymatic phenol coupling reactions that occur in natural environments. As such, they have utility in guiding remediation practices involving soil/sediment materials of different characteristics and properties.
