An emission, which covers the spectral range from the O to L-band, was observed from a Ni~(2+)-doped zinc-alumino-silicate glass at room temperature. The emission lifetime was about 440 μsec at 5 K and decreased with an increase temperature to 240 蘳ec at 300 K. The emission band was identified as the downward d-d ~3T_(2g) (~3F)→~3 A_(2g)(~3F) transition of octahedral Ni~(2+) ions. It was confirmed from X-ray diffraction analyses and transmission electron microscope observations that ZnAl_2O_4 spinel nano-crystals containing octahedral Ni~(2+) ions acted as emission centers. It is expected that the Ni~(2+)-doped glass has a potential for a broadband amplification medium.
