Technologies such fiber optic sensors, initially developed for use in the aerospace industry, are being investigated for their applicability to other markets such as civil engineering infrastructure. This paper investigates the issues of practicality and suitability of using fiber optic Bragg grating sensors as strain gauges in field applications. The main points discussed are the advantages and disadvantages of using fiber optic sensors in comparison with conventional resistance based foil gauges, and how well do the fiber optic sensor readings correlate to foil gauge strain values. Tests were carried out on an aluminum test specimen, two steel straps, and on a full-scale model of a bridge deck incorporating the two steel straps. All of the test members were instrumented with a foil gauge on one side and a fiber optic sensor on the other to allow for a comparison of the strain values.
