In a knowledge economy regions are the key level at which innovative capacity is shaped and economic processes coordinated and governed. Innovation processes in firms and industries located in regions are strongly influenced by their specific knowledge bases. The aim of the paper is to analyse the concept of regional knowledge bases in the innovation processes, as it was defined in contemporary literature and to develop a method of their identification. Based on a designed regional database paper presents the employment structure in analytic, synthetic and symbolic knowledge bases in the Czech Republic and their distribution in NUTS 3 regions. The analysis reveals the potential to innovate in various industries in regions and confirms the uneven distribution of regional knowledge bases with a prevalence of synthetic knowledge which can have an impact on innovation processes in regions and their competitiveness.
