Hydrocarbons are among the most important air pollutants that are emitted from almost all refineries process in petroleum refineries. Every day leaks and gaseous discharge from relief valves and liquid discharge which are often directed to knock-out drums are flared to minimize the impact of hydrocarbons emissions. But these flares are not 100% efficient and result into partial discharge of hydrocarbons and other emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, NO_x and SO_2 at elevated temperature that has severe impact on the industrial area and urban localities in the vicinity of industrial refining complex. In the present study, a thorough investigation has been completed to estimate the total emissions of SO_2, non methanated hydrocarbons (VOCs) and NO_X from flares in two petroleum refineries and to assess their impact on the air quality in industrial and suburban areas. A mathematical model was used to predict the ground level concentrations of major pollutants to indicate the quality of air and certify the adequacy of the model by comparing the measured values of selected receptors. It was found that (86%-98%) agreement between predicted and measured values depending on location of receptor. Further study is on going to consider all refineries in Kuwait and to measure the contribution of each source.
