The two recent Arctic winter 2009/2010 andrn2010/2011 were both quite unique. The Arcticrnwinter 2010/2011 was one of the coldest winter onrnrecord leading to the strongest depletion of ozonernever measured. Though the Arctic winterrn2009/2010 was rather warm in the climatologicalrnsense it was distinguished by a exceptionally coldrnstratosphere from mid December 2009 to midrnJanuary 2010 leading to prolonged PolarrnStratospheric Cloud (PSC) formation and strongrndenitrification. Though denitrification in 2009/2010rnwas until then the strongest in the entire Odin/SMRrnmeasurement period it was excelled by thern2010/2011 winter where denitrification led to ozonernloss that was nearly as severe as in the Antarctic.rnPSC occurrence during both winters was also quiterndifferent. While PSCs were present during thernArctic winter 2010/2011 over nearly four months,rnfrom mid December to end of March, they were notrnas persistent as the ones that occurred during thernshorter (one month) cold period during the Arcticrnwinter 2009/2010.
