Motivation in creative task: impact on individual differences in task-related alpha oscillations

Task-related changes in the EEG alpha rhythm were investigated in 28 participants (14 males and 14 females) during generation of images based on fragments presented under the instructions "generate a complete image" or "generate as original image as possible". The participants were divided into high and low achievements groups based on the median split of mean originality scores separately under the first and second instructions. Creative problem solving was generally accompanied by desynchronization of the EEG alpha oscillations. Sex- and creativity-related differences were more pronounced under the first instruction, i.e. during the "free" divergent thinking. A more pronounced alpha 1 desynchronization in posterior hemispheric regions vs. anterior hemispheric regions was found in men with high originality scores. No regional differences were found in women and in men with low originality scores. In the alpha2 frequency band, an occipito-frontal gradient of desynchronization becomes typical for all participants, except men with low originality scores. Furthermore, alpha2 desynchronization is stronger in high creativity men as compared to low creativity men, while the inverse pattern was found in women. Under motivation to unique image generation an asymmetry was found in the activation of posterior right and left hemispheric regions with the predominance of the right hemisphere for all subjects.
