Creativity associated beta2-oscillations in men and women

Task-related EEG changes in the beta2 band were studied during the performance of verbal and figural creative tasks in university students (31 males and 26 females). In both tasks they were instructed to generate unique or original ideas. Creative problem solving was accompanied with an enhancement of the beta2-synchronization differently associated to task type and sex. Widespread enhancement of power together with increased coherence focused in the right frontal cortex was found during the performance of verbal creative task in comparison to figural one. There were no sex differences in the creativity indices, but the coherence brain maps revealed more pronounced task-related increases in intrahemispheric coherence in the posterior cortex and in the left prefrontal site in males than in females. Originality scores of verbal associates positively correlated with task-related coherence focused mainly in the left frontal site only in males whereas originality scores of figural images negatively correlated with coherence reactivity (experimental minus baseline values) only in females. These task- and sex-associated effects in creativity-related topographic changes of the beta2 - synchronization may reflect different strategies of multimodal information selection during creative thinking in men and women.
