Various environmental samples including water from Lake Michigan, snow, rain andrnatmospheric aerosols were analyzed by total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). Atmosphericrnaerosols were taken hourly at different days in 2000 and 2001. One diurnal set out of thesernsamples is selected and discussed in detail. Lake Michigan water samples were collectedrnsporadically throughout the year as well as precipitation samples comprising of rain and snow.rnThe precipitation samples were part of a project involving students in the environmentalrnchemistry laboratory. All water samples could be analyzed as such after standardization.rnAtmospheric aerosols however, since collected onto filter membranes, were microwave digestedrnprior to analysis. The results presented for the three types of environmental samples show thernversatility of TXRF as analysis technique. Due to the small sample amount required, TXRFrnproves to be ideally suited in particular for atmospheric aerosols enabling a high time resolutionrnand allowing the monitoring of air masses.
