Distractions and unnecessary movement are sources for error within the workplace. For a work unit such as a blood bank, these distractions have the potential to cause catastrophic errors. This project focuses on improving the core work processes of MedStar Good Samaritan (Good Sam) Hospital Blood Bank (BB) in Baltimore, MD by minimizing distractions using two methodologies. Link Value Analysis (LVA) is employed to minimize excessive movement between components with the strongest links and reduce the number of links crossing paths, while constrained to requirements set within the workspace. A Distraction Tracking Chart (DTC) is used to collect and assess how distractions affect blood bank personnel and how they can be reduced. Recommendations are provided for handling distractions and improving process flow based quantitative data.
