Fifteen years after the Canard Rotor/Wing (CR/W) idea was first conceived, the X-50A Dragonfly is about tornachieve conversion from rotary wing flight to fixed wing flight and back to rotary wing flight. The purpose of thisrnpaper is to lay out the early history of CR/W and to tell how the idea became a demonstrator. The informationrncontained in this paper came from Boeing’s early documents and from interviews of some of the early participants.rnThe CR/W idea began in the aftermath of a NASA high speed rotorcraft study. From there, the first promisingrnapplication was a Manned Escort / Ground Attack vehicle. This application generated enough interest that the Navyrnbegan funding an Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD) that would serve as the basis for a Vertical Take-Offrn& Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Eventually, DARPA took over sponsorship of this projectrnand the X-50A Dragonfly is the result. Throughout the progression of this story, threeviews of the variousrnconfigurations are presented and discussed.
