The regions over which steady and unsteady rotorrnwake patterns exist have been examined numericallyrnfor one and two-bladed rotors. A lifting-line theory isrnused to model each rotor blade and a time-steppingrnvortex method is used to calculate the tip-vortex mo-rntion. Tip-vortex geometries for a rotor in hover andrnvertical climb have been computed. The velocitiesrnwithin the wake have been obtained and the resultsrnindicate a periodic nature of the wake in both timernand space. However, the temporal periodicity is lim-rnited to only the frst few turns of the tip-vortex forrnhovering rotors, while for rotors in suu000ecient climb,rnthe entire wake is steady relative to the blades andrnboth spatially and temporally periodic. Rotor thrustrncalculations have been performed and the eu000bect ofrnthe lower wake on rotor thrust determined. The com-rnputed thrust values show some variation due to thernfact that the lower wake remains unsteady. The re-rnsults for the wake geometry are analysed and com-rnpared to previous predictions and experimental re-rnsults.
