An automated lab reactor is utilized as continuous stirred tank reactor to develop and optimize a bench scale polymerization process. Statistical experimental designs are employed to identify the critical variables, and to screen effects and interactions. The acquired operating data are optimized to create the design for a plant polymerization process. Excellent correlation of the bench and plant scale mathematical models demonstrates that no intermediate pilot plant scale-up is necessary. The identity of monomer, catalysts, reagents, solvent and reaction mechanisms are proprietary, and are not disclosed in this presentation. This miniature polymerization pilot plant was presented by the author at the AlChE National Spring Meeting, March 11-14, 2002, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
