Some cargo contains naturally occurring radioactivernmaterial (NORM) that triggers "nuisance" alarms in RPMs at these border crossings.rnIndividuals treated with medical radiopharmaceuticals also produce nuisance alarms and canrnproduce cross-talk between adjacent lanes of a multi-lane deployment. The operationalrnimpact of nuisance alarms can be significant at border crossings. Methods have beenrndeveloped for reducing this impact without negatively affecting the requirements forrninterdiction of radioactive materials of interest. Plastic scintillator material is commonlyrnused in RPMs for the detection of gamma rays from radioactive material, primarily due tornthe efficiency per unit cost compared to other detection materials. This paper discussesrnlessons learned from the use of plastic-based RPMs at borders. Results of observations ofrnNORM and computations related to NORM characteristics are discussed as is the use ofrnenergy-based algorithms for NORM rejection.
