Risk Analysis of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe with Broken Wires

This paper presents the results of a research program sponsored by the PCCP Users Group on the risk of failure of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe with broken wires subjected to the combined effects of pipe and fluid weights, earth load and internal pressure. As a part of this research work, we performed nonlinear finite-element analysis of PCCP with broken wires subjected to the combined effects of internal pressure, pipe and fluid weights and earth loads, modeling the cracking process and the interlocking behavior of cracked concrete core. We also performed field investigation of the condition of pipes outside of the broken wire zone and hydrostatic pressure testing of pipes with broken wires. Based on the results of the finite-element analyses, hydrostatic pressure tests and field investigation of PCCP with broken wires, we have developed risk curves expressed in terms of pressures versus the number of broken wires corresponding to serviceability, damage and strength limit states, and repair priorities of PCCP with broken wires.
