EFFECT OF PERFLUOROPOLYETHER FLUIDS ON LIFE OF THRUST BALL BEARINGS

Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluids are used on magnetic recording media, aerospace industry and satellite instruments satisfactorily. Recently these oils have been used as hydraulic fluids, high temperature liquid lubricants in turbine engines and base oils of high-temperature greases. Despite considerable research on PFPE, the rheological characteristics at high pressure and their effects on life of ball bearings have not been investigated properly. First, high pressure density measurement of three kind of commercial PFPE fluids fluid K, Fluid D and Fluid F) was done from temperature 293K to 333K and pressure up to 1.2 GPa for estimation of free volume. The density - pressure -temperature relation and viscosity - pressure - temperature relation of PFPE fluids were proposed based on the free volume and the phase diagram. Next, the effect of PFPE fluids on ball bearings fatigue life was carried out by systematic tests using thrust ball bearings. The general tendency of PFPE fluids shows that bearing life increases with the film parameter. However, beneficial effect of high film parameter of Fluid F is considered that it is disturbed by permanent viscosity loss. The elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film thickness were studied and compared with experimental measurements. The results show that Fluid F, which contains an acetal group (-OCF_2O-), at high shear rate in EHL inlet side the viscosity was decreased by mechanical shear and the EHL oil film was not easily formed. In the case of Fluid F, thus contacts occur in ball bearings and shorten the bearings life thereby.
