Water Quality Impacts of Agricultural Variable Rate Technology in Mississippi

Environmental non-point pollution (NPP) problems associated with agricultural practices are considered to be the largest contributor to surface water quality degradation. A number of management practices including precision agriculture, especially agricultural variable rate technology (VRT), are being employed in an attempt to cope with NPP problems. In our study, the impact of VRT on water quality in Mississippi is examined. To assess water quality impacts, the Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC) is used. Results indicate a reduction in all environmental parameters (nitrogen and phosphorus runoff) for cotton, while profits per acre increase. For soybeans, there is no change in phosphorus loss, while nitrogen runoff and profits per acre increase. In the case of corn, we see a reduction in nitrogen runoff and phosphorus loss in sediment, while profits per acre increase.
