摘要

The Englewood Water District (EWD) is located in southwest Florida along the coastlines of Sarasota/Charlotte Counties. Potable water is derived entirely from groundwater resources, which are experiencing degrading quality. Resource management options are identified that are designed to protect and enhance existing wellfields and provide for additional supply. EWD operates three freshwater wellfields, two brackish water wellfields, and a lime softening water treatment plant (LS WTP) and reverse osmosis (RO) WTP. Finished water is distributed as a blend of equal portions of freshwater treated at the LS WTP and brackish water treated at the RO WTP. Brackish water Wellfield 2 is conjunctively located within the confines of freshwater Wellfield 2. Improvement in groundwater quality at freshwater Wellfield 2 is attributed to the conjunctive operation of brackish water Wellfield 2 since 1994. EWD water use demands will be met by the existing total permitted quantities of 5.36 million gallons per day through the year 2006 (CH2M-HILL, February 1997). Deteriorating brackish water quality, however, necessitates the development of additional water supplies. Development of a proposed brackish water wellfield as part of conjunctive operation with freshwater wellfield 3 will allow a reduction in brackish water withdrawals at the existing wellfields, thereby prolonging the use of brackish water as a resource (CH2M-HILL and PBS&J, March 2000). Aquifer Storage Recovery (ASR) is a viable option for EWD to optimize utilization of groundwater resources. Numerous ASR options have been identified with objectives of enhancing supply during the dry season and providing backup water supply in case of an emergency shutdown of a WTP or wellfield.
