Odour emissions from poultry facilities have caused significant public concerns, but very limited odour data are available to facilitate scientific understanding and effective mitigation of the odour concerns.The objective of this study is to characterize odour emissions from representative layer houses and quantify the odour concentrations and emission rates.Odour samples were taken at the air inlets and exhausts of two identical manure-belt layer houses once a month for a year.The samples were collected using a vacuum chamber and sent within 24hours of collection to the Purdue University olfactometry laboratory for evaluation of odour characteristics, hedonic tone, intensity, and concentration.Results showed that annual mean odour concentration and emission rates were 335 ± 73 OUE m-3 and 0.14 ± 0.11 OUE s-1 hen-1,respectively.There were significant seasonal variations in odour concentrations and emission rates with high concentrations in summer and winter and high emission rates in warmer months.The findings can be used to assess odour problems associated with layer houses and develop effective mitigation technology and management plans.
