Food production systems are continuing to be scrutinized demanding an increased level of accountability related to sustainable production.The definition of sustainability is broad and can be defined differently for each individual.At the same time, efforts are being lead to regulate or eliminate specific types of animal housing resulting in a dictation of how to produce the food source.However, there has been limited research attention to explore the sustainability of the food system, specifically egg production.Therefore, the Coalition for a Sustainable Egg Supply was formed with the intent to investigate the sustainability of three different housing systems:conventional cage, enriched colony cage, and cage-free aviary.Five different sustainable areas:animal health and well-being, food safety and quality, environment, worker health and safety,and food affordability, would be assessed at a commercial level on the same flocks at the same time.Michigan State University and University of California, Davis scientists lead the research with additional scientists from Iowa State University and the USDA-ARS Egg Safety and Quality Research Unit.The first research flock was placed in April 2011 with the second of the two-flock study housed in July 2012.A comprehensive final report was released in March 2015.The Coalition's work resulted in science-based data that will provide guidance to the future of egg production and purchasing decisions within the U.S.
