The next fifteen years will probably see more than a doubling of current air traffic levels in European airspace. Since air traffic controllers are already very busy, some degree of automation will be needed to enable such desired safe increases in air traffic capacity. Given the safety critical nature of Air Traffic Management (ATM), there is significant effort being undertaken to harmonise the human and the automation. One project that is aimed at such harmonisation is the SHAPE project (Solutions for Human-Automation Partnerships in European ATM) being carried out by EUROCONTROL. This project is outlined, and some preliminary findings from the areas of human error, ageing, and the future role of the controller, are discussed.
