In this paper we discuss the fundamentals of electroosmotic flow and biomolecular transport in nanochannels with applications to drug delivery systems. Drug delivery systems transport biomolecules much like natural ion channels, and the flow processes in these two devices are described in terms of a mathematical model. Results of the model, including potential, velocity and concentration are presented for a variety of nanochannel systems. The model is validated for two systems: an electroosmotic pump and a diffusion pump demonstrated by iMEDD, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio. The model is shown to reproduce the experimental data with a high degree of accuracy. In particular, the model reproduces the flux of albumin and glucose through channels as small as seven nanometers.
