In recent years it has become possible to generate new hybrid latex materials based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) and acrylic polymers. These hybrid materials can be generated with a variety of latex particle morphologies (cold blend, core-shell, homogeneous IPN-type structure). The coating properties obtained by these materials strongly depend on the resin morphology in the final coating film, which is determined both by the latex particle morphology and the details of the film formation process. We demonstrate that for many applications, an IPN latex morphology has distinct advantages. Optimized formulations based on IPN type latexes have excellent barrier properties, chemical resistance, and weatherability - thus providing similar performance properties to those achieved using traditional fiuoropolymer dispersion coatings but without the need for high levels of VOC and/or the requirement for high temperature baking.
