Over the last couple of decades, there has been interest in latex blends, the physical mixing of two different latices with homogeneous particle morphologies, which has the benefit of potentially reducing VOC content by reducing the need for coalescing agents. This paper includes a well-referenced introduction to latex blend research. However, there has been relatively litde research published on blends of thermoplastic nanoparticles in the 8-25 nm diameter range with larger thermoplastic latices. The authors have previously reported the effect of pre-coalescence (internal) or post-coalescence (external) crosslinking on conventionally sized latex film formation, properties and latex morphology.
