In this work a novel approach to the characterization of liquids by measuring the specific acoustic impedance of the fluid is presented. The method is based on the fluid-induced transformation of the transmission spectrum of an elastic waveguide and has a lot of promising properties: a comparatively simple experimental structure, a good detectability of the receiver voltage minima, where a determination of the absolute signal amplitude is not necessary, a high sensitivity for low liquid densities as well as a controllable sensitivity. Moreover, the separation of the immersion liquid into a coupling fluid above the plate and a fluid with unknown parameters below the plate facilitates a non-invasive measurement technique. As there are, apart from the thickness, no demands on the properties of the elastic layer, it is even conceivable to use the walls of tanks or pipes as reflecting waveguides.
