As a critical part of the strategy for competitiveness on future aircraft programs such as the Joint Strike Fighter, Lockheed Martin has made a lasting commitment to Laser Ultrasonic technology through a state-of-the-art facility which combines research and development laboratories within a production environment. LMTAS has determined that Laser UT is the most rapid and cost effective method for testing complex composite structures. Production rates of composites on future programs will be greater than have ever existed previously. These rates necessitate a break from conventional ultrasonic testing. Laser UT can inspect complex contoured composite structures up to ten times faster than conventional automated ultrasonic inspection systems greatly reducing inspection time and cost and improving component throughput for aircraft that contain increasing amounts of composite materials. The Laser Ultrasonic Technology Center utilizes the latest in laser and computer hardware/software technology to provide a user and production friendly environment for rapid and thorough inspection of composite structures.
