Remediation of contamination sites has become a major activity for engineers and for society. The American Society of Civil Engineers has prepared a manual to provide information for site owners, consultants and contractors involved in the cleanup process. This paper provides an overview of the introductory material in the manual. Site remediation is the last and worst way of handling hazardous materials, and every effort should be made to avoid it. When they are unavoidable, cleanup efforts are governed by local, state, and federal regulations. Remediation may begin with emergency measures to contain a spill, but will always involve careful characterization of the site, review of possible remediation methods, selection of the best method, design and planning, and finally implementation of the cleanup. Community involvement is always valuable. The manual describes the complete step-by-step process necessary for a major site remediation as well as expedited approaches that are quicker and cheaper and that may be appropriate in many cases.
